Week 6: How We Won Back Our Time as Parents

February 22, 2024 . 2 minutes read

After two weeks of doing absolutely nothing (and loving it), I finally felt normal again. So, Soundarya and I sat down and decided it was time to bring some order into our lives with a few solid routines.

The first thing we realized? Neither of us had any personal me time. Half the day was spent with the kids, and the rest was spent cleaning up the chaos they left behind.

So, being the engineers that we are, we applied our favorite algorithm: divide and conquer.

  1. Sleep Routine for Kids: We set a strict 12-hour sleep schedule for them, aiming for bedtime between 7:30-8:30 PM. I took charge of making Adhiyan follow it, while Soundarya handled Athira.
  2. House Cleanup Strategy: No matter what, I’m responsible for cleaning up the house, and she takes care of the kitchen after the final dinner prep.

We decided to test this experiment for a week and see what happened.

At first, it was absolute mayhem. But after a few days? Magic. They started sleeping before 8 PM, and just like that, we unlocked two extra hours—both at night and in the morning!

I finally got some distraction-free time to focus on my personal work, while Soundarya happily scrolled through Instagram and caught up on her serials. Meanwhile, the kids were getting a solid 12 hours of sleep.

End result? A perfect win-win!
